“Don’t ignore pain at the back of your mouth. Early evaluation of wisdom teeth can prevent infections, damage to nearby teeth, and more complicated surgery later.”
You should consider seeing a dentist when a wisdom tooth causes symptoms or shows signs of problems. Common warning signs include:
🦷 Pain or swelling around the back of the jaw.
🦷 Red, swollen, or bleeding gums near the wisdom tooth.
🦷 Difficulty opening your mouth or pain while chewing.
🦷 Food getting trapped behind the last tooth, causing bad breath or infection.
🦷 Repeated infections (pericoronitis) around a partially erupted wisdom tooth.
🦷 Crowding or damage to the adjacent tooth.
🦷 Cysts or bone loss seen on an X-ray.
🦷 Impacted wisdom tooth (stuck under the gum or bone) causing pain, swelling, or decay.
When you don’t need to worry
If the wisdom tooth:
- Has fully erupted,
- Is in the correct position,
- Can be cleaned properly,
- Has no decay, pain, or gum disease,
it may not need removal and can simply be monitored during regular dental check-ups.
As a dentist, you may find that many patients delay treatment until swelling develops. A simple panoramic X-ray (OPG) can often identify problems before symptoms become severe.
